The remains of a wreck, thought to be a steamer, lies somewhere off Cobb Island (in the vicinity of the wreck of the Birch Lake) in 60' of water. First dove in 1997 off the vessel Deep Explorer, she did not yield many clues as to her identity because of low visibility. She sits upright with her hull flayed open to either side in some areas, sanded in but upright in others, and coral encrusted debris strewn everywhere. Coal spills out on the port side with other debris leading away from the wreck. Large boilers and machinery rise 15' off the bottom, and the site was abundant with flounder, black sea bass, and even juvenile lobster -- uncommon given her shallow depth. However, it was noted that the port side of the wreck rose 7' off the bottom towards the stern with large brass spikes protruding from the wood hull.
