The Tiger was a 410' long tanker that was just about to
reach the safety of the Chesapeake Bay when she was torpedoed by
the U-754 on 1 April 1942. The tanker's stern eventually
settled under water, but she remained afloat. Attempts to tow her
in and salvage her were abandoned, and the wreck was eventually
demolished to eliminate a hazard to navigation. She now rests on
her starboard side but in major distress. The majority of the
wreck consists of strewn hull plates and sections, with her
engine still evident. Mangled portholes have been recovered
amongst the wreckage, as have at least two bronze bells recovered
from wreck buoys that sunk onto the wreck site.
