The USS Sturtevant (DD-240) was the second ship to be named after Naval aviator Albert D. Sturtevant. She was a Clemson-Class destroyer built in 1919. The Sturtevant was 314 feet in length, and 31 feet in beam. Her geared turbine engines could propel the four-stacker at 35 knots. Unfortunately, she quickly became obsolete and was decommissioned on January 30, 1931. Due to the hostilities of World War II, she was re-commissioned and served as an escort and picket ship. Ported in Key West, she departed the naval station and cruised north-northwest. Unbeknownst to the captain, a new minefield was laid just a few days earlier. The destroyer slammed into several mines that sent her to the bottom. Fifteen crew were lost in the accident. She now rests in two large sections in approximately 60 feet of water.
