The William D. Sanner was formerly a luxury yacht that had
been converted to be used as a harbor pilot boat for the Maryland
Pilots. After delivering a pilot to the M/V Levernbank on
the night of 1 December 1938, the Sanner unwisely crossed
in front of the other vessel without enough clearance; the Sanner
smashed into her starboard side. The wreck was eventually
wire-dragged in 1944 and forgotten.
The wreck lies very close to the site of the Chilore in
70' of water. Her hull is intact, similar to a steel bathtub,
with her superstructure spread within and around the wreck. The
wreck is abundant with artifacts as she is not dove often.
Portholes can still be found on and off the wreck attached to
loose hull plates, as well as bronze blackout covers, silverware,
miscellaneous china, and a variety of other artifacts.
