A 393' long freighter proceeding in a convoy, the Manuela
came under attack by the U-404. The vessel was heavily
damaged and listed, but refused to sink. The U-boat attempted to
return and finish off her victim, only to be thwarted by the
Coast Guard Cutter CGC 483. The stricken freighter was
taken under tow, but eventually sunk before reaching shallow
water.
The wreck of the Manuela rests in three pieces in 160' of water. The wreck lies on her starboard side with an expansive debris field stretching out in the sand. Highest point of the wreck is approximately 120', where divers can reach the bilge keel of the mid-ship section. The mid-ship section also provides a cavernous penetration, though much of the machinery has fallen to the sand. Divers have recovered the bell, portholes, and china, though many more artifacts remain including several attached portholes.
