The wreck of the Jim Atria rests four miles north of Port Everglades in 135 feet of water.  The vessel was originally the Poinciana, a 227-foot long Dutch freighter built in 1961.  In September 1987, she was purchased and sunk by the Broward County Artificial Reef Program and Mr. Jim Atria, a local real estate developer, after she capsized and was abandoned in the Miami River.  She initially came to rest on her side in 110 feet of water, but Hurricane Andrew moved the wreck offshore to her current resting spot in 1993.  The force of the storm surge also righted the vessel.  Intact and upright, her masts rise to within 70 feet of the surface.  The starboard side is covered in a dense envelope of gorgonians; her rudder is hardly recognizable due to the thick growth.
