SHIPWRECKS OF THE SUNSHINE STATE!
The USS Fred T. Berry (DD-858), a Fletcher class destroyer, was built by the Bethlehem Steel Company in San Pedro, California. Launched on 28 January 1945 and commissioned on 12 May 1945, she was 390.6' long with a 41.1' beam. Alerted for temporary duty in the Mediterranean at the opening of the Korean war, the Fred T. Berry sailed from Newport 5 July 1950, and at the end of the summer, sailed on through the Suez Canal to join the 7th Fleet in the Far East. She screened fast carriers launching strikes on targets in North Korea, and escorted the battleship Missouri (BB-63) to her bombardment duty at Hungnam during the withdrawal from that port. The USS Fred T. Berry eventually received two battle stars for Korean war service.
Sunk in May 1972 during underwater explosion experiments, the Berry now sits upright in 370' of water off Key West.
