The Australia was built by Texaco, Inc. in 1928.  With a length of 510 ft. and a gross tonnage of 11,628, the Australia was one of the largest vessels to be sunk off Hatteras.  She was sent to the bottom by the U-332 on March 16, 1942.  The wreck now rests in two pieces in 100-110 feet of water near Diamond Shoals.
