The Atlas, a 430' long tanker carrying a load of gasoline, was torpedoed by the U-552 on 9 April 1942. The wreck now lies in 130' of water, though in 3 large intact sections that rise 35' from the bottom. The propeller is buried, though the stern section is largely intact and provides many areas to penetrate. Tankers generally do not provide many artifacts aside from the wheelhouse and stern house sections; this is where divers should concentrate their efforts for brass prizes. The wheelhouse now lies spread out, buried in the sand near amidships.
